HEMET, Calif. – Investigators say the teenage driver of a pickup who hit and injured eight students in a crosswalk outside a Southern California high school was going more than 50 mph and contrary to what he told authorities at the scene his brakes did not fail.
The California Highway Patrol told the Riverside Press-Enterprise (bit.ly/NBZktE) Monday that its investigators will try to find any other mechanical problems with the truck that hit students outside Hemet High School on Wednesday before giving a report to the district attorney, who will decide whether to file criminal charges against 18-year-old driver Daniel Carrillo.
School district safety coordinator Lucy Rebuck tells the Press-Enterprise that seven of the injured students have been released from the hospital.
Rebuck says one girl, 15-year-old Helen Richardson, remains in critical condition.
