A Detroit driver was in critical condition Thursday after he suffered a brutal beating at the hands of an angry mob as a result of accidentally hitting an 11-year-old boy.
The Detroit Free Press reported that the driver, 54, was attacked by the large group of men at about 4:10 p.m. after he left his pickup to render aid to the boy.
Police said it appears that the driver did not break any traffic laws. The paper described the boy's injuries as less serious than the driver's.
"My understanding is that it was a low-speed accident," Sgt. Michael Woody told the paper. "The man did try to stop and render aid. He did everything he could exactly right."
Police are seeking the public's help in identifying the attackers.
