MIAMI – A group of students from communist Cuba is taking classes at the largest public college in Miami for the first time in more than five decades.
Miami Dade College announced on Monday that the students have arrived in the largest Cuban exile community in the U.S. and that they will spend a semester taking courses including sociology, computing, psychology, business and English. The students will obtain a certificate of completion once finished.
The students age in range from 18 to 37 and are from throughout the Caribbean island. More than half are women.
President Barack Obama administration has resumed academic programs that allow U.S. citizens to travel and take classes in Cuba. However, the exchange is largely one-sided. Cuban students rarely, if ever, travel to the U.S. for similar coursework.
