SAN DIEGO -- Officials say an engine room aboard a cruise ship headed for Mexico has caught fire, leaving the vessel adrift.

According to a statement from Carnival Cruise Lines, the blaze aboard the Carnival Splendor broke out Monday around 6 a.m. as it was some 55 miles off of the northern Baja coast.

The ship has 3,299 guests and 1,167 crew members. No one was hurt.

The fire was extinguished by the afternoon but officials could not restore power and decided to terminate the cruise.

Officials say the 952-foot-long ship, which left the Port of Long Beach on Sunday, was to be towed to Ensenada in Baja.

The U.S. Coast Guard says it and the Mexican navy have dispatched aircraft and cutters to provide assistance.
