FORT LUPTON, Colo. -- The pilot of an experimental, homemade plane has died after his plane crashed near Fort Lupton.

Weld County Undersheriff Margie Martinez says the plane crashed around noon Wednesday northeast of Fort Lupton. She says the male pilot was the only person onboard.

His name hasn't been released.

Witnesses say the plane had been flying since about 11 a.m., doing acrobatics. Martinez says people in the area told authorities that the plane's wings collapsed and the craft then spiraled into the ground.

Federation Aviation Administration investigators are expected to arrive at the crash site.
