A bus driver for a central New York school district has been charged after police say she left a 3-year-old boy alone on a bus for hours in near-freezing temperatures.

Authorities say 55-year-old Janet Lane was charged with endangering the welfare of a child after she failed to drop off the boy as planned after early dismissal of the Penn Yan school district's Head Start program last Friday.

The boy's mother, Karen Wager, told WHEC-TV in Rochester that her son was supposed to be dropped off at a church but wasn't there when she arrived to pick him up. She says her son spent more than three hours strapped into a car seat on the cold bus.

School officials say Lane has been suspended from her job.

There was no phone listing for Lane in Penn Yan.
