A Connecticut man is accused of using an electric shock collar on his 9-year-old step-daughter while the girl's mother allegedly did nothing to stop him.

Prosecutors said in Danbury Superior Court on Wednesday that 43-year-old Eduardo Montanez used the collar to punish the girl. He's charged along with girl's mother, 34-year-old Paula Montanez.

The stepfather's lawyer tells WFSB-TV (http://bit.ly/18DW74G) girl may have made up the story to get attention. Attorney Robert Kolesnik Jr. said the medical report doesn't support the allegations.

Eduardo Montanez is held on $250,000 bail on charges of third-degree assault, risk of injury to a child and cruelty. Paula Montanez is held on $200,000 bail on charges of risk of injury to a child, conspiracy to commit third-degree assault and conspiracy to commit cruelty.
