Cincinnati's police chief said a policeman and an armed suspect who were shot during a gunfight with other officers have died.

Chief Jeffrey Blackwell said the 27-year police veteran died after the shooting Friday morning in the Madisonville neighborhood. He said the suspect was also killed.

Blackwell said multiple shots were fired between the suspect and officers responding to a 911 call. The chief said he believes the suspect was on the street when police arrived.

The shooting comes nine days after Cincinnati police released a plan for dealing with a recent surge of gun violence in the city.

The police department scheduled a news conference for noon to provide an update on the shooting.

"This is a tragedy, and we're going to try to get through it," Blackwell said.

The officer and the suspect weren't identified. The chief said the officer was wearing body armor.
