CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Police officials in North Carolina have been preparing for a year to provide security for the Democratic National Convention this summer in Charlotte.

Charlotte Deputy Police Chief Harold Medlock says dealing with Chicago protesters who threw rocks, assaulted others and damaged property was a valuable lesson in how disruptive elements in protests can develop.
The convention is expected to draw a large crowd and demonstrators who range from the peaceful and politically minded to anarchists bent on disrupting the events.
The convention is being held in Charlotte from Sept. 4-6. On the last day, President Barack Obama will make his acceptance speech at Bank of America stadium.
