The list of 15 most common surnames in the United States now includes six of Hispanic origin, with Garcia and Rodriguez galloping not so far behind longtime leaders Smith and Johnson.
In the year 2000 only four Hispanic names made the list, which is compiled every 10 years by the U.S. Census Bureau.
In 1990 there were none.
In addition to Garcia and Rodriguez, the Hispanic names among the new top 15 are now Martinez, Hernandez, Lopez and Gonzalez.
According to the data, the names Taylor and Thomas were pushed out of the list by newcomers Gonzalez and Lopez.
Despite the surge of Hispanic names, however, the Census report shows that the names showing the fastest growth in terms of frequency compared to 10 years ago are mostly Asian: Zhang (up 111 percent), Li (93 percent), Ali (66 percent), Liu (64 percent) and Khan (63 percent).
Three of the 15 fastest growing were Hispanic: Vazquez (up 63 percent), Bautista (59 percent) and Velazquez (59 percent).
