Houston police said a 3-year-old boy died after crawling into a hot car to look for a toy.

Police were treating little Evan Trapolino’s death in north Houston as a tragic accident and didn’t expect to file criminal charges, Fox 26 reported Thursday.

Evan couldn’t get out because the rear doors of the car had child safety locks, the station reported.

“A friend of theirs showed up and found him in the car, and they started doing CPR,” family friend Chris Johnson told the station.

He said no one saw or heard Evan wander outside. The car was parked in the driveway of the Trapolino home.

“Everybody is wanting to rip the family apart,” Johnson said. “How can you leave your kid in a hot car like that? That’s not the case.”

The National Weather Service reports the temperature in Houston about that time was 94 degrees, but it felt like 102 degrees.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
