Some California residents have been left wondering why they feel their neighborhood shaking and yet no earthquakes or sonic booms were being recorded.
SF Gate reported Wednesday that residents from San Jose to Santa Clara reported feeling an earthquake on Tuesday, but the source of the alleged shaking has yet to be discovered.
Witnesses told CBS San Francisco that they felt the shaking for 5 to 10 seconds. Others on Twitter described the noise as “bigger than a truck.”
However, the U.S. Geological Survey said no earthquake took place.
"Our on-duty seismologist did an extensive search, and we did not see any seismic activity in the South Bay," USGS spokeswoman Susan Garcia told the paper. "So it's not an earthquake, whatever they're feeling — as far as we can tell."
A sonic boom was also suggested to have occurred, but Naval Air Station spokesman Marc Calero told SF Gate the descriptions were “inconsistent” with a sonic boom.
“With a sonic boom, it's very sudden. It's almost like an explosion, and it's very short lived, less than a second. Especially if you're getting reports from places like San Jose,” Calero added. “It's very unlikely that anyone in the military would be responsible for something like that in a highly populated area."
Santa Cruz police said they received a report of a “loud boom” but no emergency reports. San Jose police added that they were unaware of any shaking in the area.
