Applause broke out in a New Orleans courtroom when a judge declared a woman not guilty in the shooting death of her husband in 2005.

News outlets report that state District Judge Arthur Hunter ruled Friday that the shooting of Renaldo Curley by Catina Curley was justifiable.

Last year, Louisiana's Supreme Court overturned the woman's 2007 second-degree murder conviction. She was then freed on bond after serving 11 years of a life sentence.

The high court last year said Curley's trial attorney should have called an expert on battered woman syndrome. Renaldo Curley had a documented history of beating Catina Curley.

Witnesses said the Curleys argued before the shooting. Prosecutors tried to cast doubt on Catina's claims to police that that her husband had earlier placed his hands near her neck.
