PHILADELPHIA – A man sifting through trash in Philadelphia discovered an abandoned baby in a box, police confirmed Wednesday.
The man and his friend told WTXF-TV they were attempting to clean up the residential neighborhood when they spotted the baby in a large pile of trash.
The newborn -- only a couple hours old -- was taken to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. Police said the baby was in good condition.
WCAU-TV reported the infant -- a girl -- was found wrapped in a blanket inside the box outside a daycare center in north Philadelphia.
Detectives were going door to door and searching local hospitals for the infant's mother. Philadelphia Police Officer Tanya Little said there is concern for the mother's safety considering she had recently given birth.
