CLEVELAND – Ariel Castro's former defense attorney says the Cleveland kidnapper knew the end was near and intentionally left doors unlocked in the months before three women escaped from his home.
The attorney, Craig Weintraub, says Castro understood that the girl who he fathered with one of his captives was getting older and needed to be in school. Weintraub tells WKYC-TV (http://on.wkyc.com/1g4JwfQ ) in Cleveland that Castro wasn't willing to go to police and that the only way the women were going to get out was by leaving the doors unlocked.
Tuesday is the anniversary of the escape from the house by Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus. All three were held for nearly a decade.
Castro pleaded guilty in August and committed suicide in prison.
