A police raid at an Amsterdam-style private cannabis lounge in Denver is raising questions about where adults can smoke pot in a state that allows recreational marijuana consumption — but not in public.

Denver police say they showed up at Maryjane's Social Club last week to investigate illegal activity. They cited three people for smoking in public. The club's owner was ticketed for violating state laws banning indoor smoking.

Marijuana advocates say the club is private — and because of that, smoking there is legal.

Police say they are not targeting the increasingly popular private pot clubs. But all pot-related businesses are under scrutiny since Colorado legalized recreational sales in January, and other club owners are taking notice.

Andrew Overall, who was issued a citation for public consumption at Maryjane's, says he plans to fight his ticket in court.
