An afternoon gain fades for US indexes, leaving the market slightly lower; Netflix, Etsy soar

NEW YORK – Stocks are giving up an afternoon gain and ending the day slightly lower.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell six points to close at 18,105 Thursday.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost a point to 2,105. The Nasdaq composite fell three points to 5,007. Each loss was less than 0.1 percent.

Netflix soared 18 percent after announcing a surge in subscribers in the latest quarter. Citigroup rose 2 percent after reporting stronger earnings as its legal costs fell. Online marketplace Etsy nearly doubled on its first day of trading.

The price of U.S. crude oil rose 32 cents to close at $56.71 a barrel in New York.

Bond prices didn't move much. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note held steady at 1.89 percent.
