An 82-year-old homeowner shot and killed an intruder who broke into in his home Monday night near Birmingham, Ala., authorities said.

Police said David Haynes fatally shot the intruder after he was alerted to the break-in around 9:45 p.m. Monday on 12th Street in Midfield.

WBRC-TV reports that the intruder was identified as a 34-year-old man who lived down the street. He died shortly after the shooting.

Haynes' neighbor, Eddie Alexander, said Haynes recently put up a chime outside of the house after a recent break-in attempt. He was reportedly woke up Friday after hearing the sound of the chimes signaling someone was inside.

Alexander told WBRC-TV Haynes spotted an intruder rummaging through his refrigerator and shot him in the face.

"I don't blame him for doing it. He was protecting his property, protecting his home, protecting himself," Alexander told the station.

The case has been turned over to the Jefferson County District Attorney.

Few other details were immediately available early Wednesday.
