FORT MYERS, Fla. – Five Transport Security Administration (TSA) staff members in Florida have been fired and 38 more suspended after an investigation found they failed to perform random screenings at Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers, Fla., last year.
The 43 staff members represent about 15 percent of the TSA employees at the airport, The News-Press reported.
The internal investigation found up to 400 travelers who underwent routine screening never received additional checks during a two-month period at the airport last year, TSA spokesman David Castelveter said.
The TSA notified the employees about the disciplinary action last Friday and those affected have the opportunity to appeal.
It is one of the largest disciplinary actions ever taken by the TSA during its 10-year history.
