Firefighters have contained an overnight fire that gutted an historic cannery building on Oregon's waterfront near the mouth of the Columbia River.

The fire was reported about 10 p.m. Thursday at the Cannery Cafe in Astoria. As firefighters were putting it out, they saw smoke from an old cannery building next door that housed a dozen businesses.

Fire department spokeswoman Tara Constantine says both buildings were gutted. Fire crews were able to save the dock on which the buildings stood.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries.
