ATLANTA – Ten former Atlanta public school educators convicted of participating in a widespread conspiracy to cheat on state tests are set to be sentenced after the judge in the case gave them extra time to negotiate deals with prosecutors.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Jerry Baxter heard from character witnesses Monday. He delayed sentencing until Tuesday morning after learning that District Attorney Paul Howard had been talking to defense attorneys and thought the case could be resolved with sentencing deals.
The former educators were convicted earlier this month on a racketeering charge. Some face additional charges.
Howard said before the packed courtroom that any deals would require an acceptance of responsibility by the former educators.
An 11th convicted former educator had a baby over the weekend and will be sentenced later.
