A U.S. Border Patrol agent has shot and killed a person during a traffic stop near the Texas coast.

Border Patrol spokesman Henry Mendiola said Thursday the shooting near Corpus Christi involved a vehicle that was suspected of smuggling illegal immigrants. He said no agents or anyone else were injured.

Mendiola said he did not know what provoked the shooting. He said investigators are still at the scene and that Border Patrol was expected to release more information later Thursday afternoon.

Authorities set up a barricade and helicopters circled above where the shooting was believed to have taken place.
