A homeless man was arrested for allegedly attempting to steal an airplane at the Crystal River Airport in Citrus County, Fla. on Saturday morning, according to authorities.
Timothy Winburn, 35, was caught by police while trying to leave the airport on foot. According to Citrus County Chronical, a witness told deputies that Winburn had been inside the 1996 Piper Archer airplane and had attempted to start it.
Winburn reportedly told officers his name was John and that he did not know his last name or have any identification on his person. Authorities searched Winburn after arrest and discovered a Florida ID with his full name.
The owner of the airplane told authorities he did not know Winburn and had not given him permission to board the aircraft or take anything from inside. Winburn was reportedly wearing a jacket belonging to the owner, which he says he left inside the plane.
The owner said in the report the right side wind flap of the plane was not working after Winburn was seen inside and the starter is possibly damaged.
Winburn was charged with one count each of grand theft, burglary of a conveyance, petit theft and giving a false name to law enforcement. His bond was set at $16,500, Citrus County Chronicle reports.
