After months of speculation, Disney has confirmed it’s turning the animated hit “Frozen” into a musical production staged exclusively aboard its cruise line.
On Wednesday, the entertainment giant announced the new show “Frozen, A Musical Spectacular” will debut this November aboard the 1,754-passenger Disney Wonder when it starts sailing out of Galveston, Texas.
According to Disney, “the story of royal sisters Anna and Elsa will be presented like never before, with an innovative combination of traditional theatrical techniques, modern technology and classic Disney whimsy, completely unique to the Disney Wonder production. The show features dynamic costumes and sets, remarkable special effects, and spectacular production numbers that expand upon the most imaginative elements of the film.”
The show, helmed by Tony Award-wining director Sheryl Kaller (Next Fall, Mothers and Sons), features puppetry for characters like Sven and snowman Olaf by Michael Curry-- whose creative designs are featured in the long-running Broadway smashThe Lion King.
“Frozen,” which hit theaters in 2013, raked in nearly $1.3 billion in box office revenue worldwide, making it the highest grossing animated film of all time .
Productions of “Frozen, A Musical Spectaurlar” will start Nov. 10 in the Disney Wonder’s 970-plus seat theater.
