Wyo. Court Repeals 1992 Term Limits Law

Voters do not have the right to impose term limits on state legislators through a ballot initiative, the Wyoming Supreme Court (search) ruled Tuesday.

In a 5-0 decision, the justices said the only legal way to limit the terms of elected officials is through a constitutional amendment.

The term limit law was adopted by the voters in 1992 with 77 percent approval. The law held House and Senate members to 12 years.

The measure was challenged by some of the 13 House and Senate members subject to term limits this year. Tuesday's ruling means they now can seek re-election if they want.
