A visitors center for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (search) will likely be built in the shadow of Abraham Lincoln.

After 10 months spent examining seven potential sites, the National Park Service (search) and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund announced its selection on Wednesday. They recommended a patch of land that borders the Lincoln Memorial.

Officials said it is the only site on the list which meets four mandatory requirements. Those include preserving the view of the National Mall (search) from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and from the Washington Monument.

A public meeting is scheduled on Feb. 22 to discuss the plan. The center will be paid for by private donations.
