Tornado Watch, Wind Advisory Issued for St. Louis Area

A tornado watch and a wind advisory were issued in the St. Louis, Mo., region on Tuesday, as a number of storms in the area continued to gather strength throughout the day — raising fears that they would bring twisters with them.

The tornado watch was in effect until 8 p.m. EST and the wind advisory until 9 p.m., according to

Several storms had already been accompanied by hail in parts of Missouri, including Pike and Lincoln counties.

A series of smaller systems were also developing elsewhere in the state and in Illinois.

Forecasters were predicting that a powerful cold front would sweep through the area ahead of northwest gusts of between 25 and 35 miles per hour, with some winds reaching 45 miles per hour, reported.

Rain was expected to change to sleet and snow, with some accumulation likely. Temperatures were predicted to drop into the teens and 20s overnight.
