On tonight's edition of “Special Report”…
• President Bush again today ruled out immediate withdrawal from Iraq, but said reconstruction in the country is not progressing as quickly as the U.S. had hoped because of the continuing violence there. Carl Cameron has a report.
• And Democrats were out in force today to speak out against the president's speech on Iraq, and to disavow the notion that the Democratic Party is not unified on the issue of Iraq. Rep. John Murtha was very critical of the president's speech, saying the administration had poor planning from the very beginning. Brian Wilson looks at Democratic reaction to the speech.
• Then, the trial of Saddam Hussein continued today, but with one notable absence, the former Iraqi leader himself. Dana Lewis has details from the trial.
• And while traveling in the Ukraine, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice delivered a rebuke to Russian President Vladimir Putin for a new law that restricts the activities of human rights groups. Rice said democracies are built on freedom of speech. James Rosen has the story.
• Also, documents released by the House International Relations Committee shed light on just what went on behind the scenes in the U.N. Oil-for-Food scandal. Jonathan Hunt will bring us highlights from the report.
Plus, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved legislation today that would keep as many as 19 million taxpayers from paying the alternative minimum tax next year. Jim Angle explains how this tax affects the middle class.
