Three Militants Sentenced to Death for Sinai Attacks
ISMAILIYA, Egypt – A state security court on Thursday sentenced three Islamic militants to death for their involvement in suicide attacks that killed 34 people at Sinai resorts in 2004.
Younes Mohammed Mahmoud, Osama al-Nakhlawi and Mohammed Jaez Sabbah were found guilty of terrorism, murder, illegal possession of weapons and belonging to a terrorist group.
More than 100 people wounded in the bombings at the resorts of Taba and Ras Shitan on the Egyptian-Israeli border, an area popular with Israeli tourists. Eleven Israelis were killed.
The court sentenced two other defendants to life imprisonment, and another eight received sentences ranging from five to 15 years in prison for playing lesser roles in the attacks.
A defense lawyer, Ahmed Seif el-Iadslam, criticized the sentences as being "unjust."
Under state security court rules, convicts may appeal only to President Hosni Mubarak for clemency.
