ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. – Two single-engine planes collided in mid-air near Rock Springs, killing three people.
Authorities said they got a report of an "explosion in the sky" around 12:26 p.m. Sunday. There was wreckage on the ground about five miles northwest of the Rock Springs-Sweetwater County Airport.
One plane was being flown from Polson, Mont., to Rock Springs with two persons aboard, said FAA spokesman Ian Gregor in Seattle. That plane was a Cirrus SR22.
The other pilot's travel plans were unknown, he said. The second plane was a Cessna 172.
Debris from the burned wreckage was scattered over an area of five acres in a remote area where emergency vehicles were gathered, the Salt Lake City television station KSL reported.
A parachute was visible in the debris field, but there was no indication the parachute had been used in a collision that left no survivors, the station reported.
Sweetwater County authorities were releasing no information on the aircraft, the circumstances of the collision or the victims.
Sheriff's spokesman Dick Blust said deputies were still working to identify the occupants of the planes and notify their relatives.
