Never mind that he won four World Series championships and keeps winning his American League East Division, year in and year out. Now it's Joe Torre who might be out, because he didn't deliver "this" year.

The Detroit Tigers mauled his Yankees. And now Yankee owner George Steinbrenner reportedly set to maul old Joe.

It happens all the time: Guys who got it done are un-done because they didn't keep getting it done.

And not just guys.

Former Hewlett Packard boss Carly Fiorina is traveling the country with a book describing her shock and dismay at being canned from a job she thought she was doing well, until her board told her she was not. Carly was gone.

So too Tom Freston: year-in, year-out, among the most successful and money-making media executives out there. The guy who made MTV a cash cow and parent Viacom a lot of cash — period. Until one quarter, he didn't and he was gone.

Reminders all, that nothing is certain, save the fleeting nature of fame.

Just ask Joe or Carly or Tom or anyone who thought they ruled the world — only to wake up one morning and find out, they did not.
