Every week that passes, a story always seems to get under my skin. Generally it's those new cases, those new crimes that are shocking and just beyond the pale of comprehension. Yet it was my interview with Laci Peterson's stepfather, Ron Grantski, that really affected me this weekend and I've got to tell you why.
Ron and I discussed how Scott Peterson's parents are now offering up $250,000 for information leading to the capture of the "real killers" of Laci and Conner. I understand parents will go to any means to protect and fight for their children, but doesn't this seem just like a play from O.J. Simpson's defense? And more than that, a jury of Scott's peers found him guilty.
Scott now sits on death row awaiting his ultimate fate while he goes through what will be a lengthy appeals process. That's the way the law works — I've been there, I know.
But what really got under my skin was when Ron told me that Scott's parents were trying to get money from Laci's estate to cover expenses incurred while the trial was in progress.
The Petersons want thousands of dollars for various items that were purchased under the guise of keeping up Laci's home. Some of those purchases included new locks to keep Laci's family out of the house and for a vacuum cleaner that the Petersons used to clean up after holding meetings during the trial.
It's been over four years since Laci went missing and this nickel and diming of Laci's family and this new reward are not only open old wounds, it speaks volumes about the Petersons. Who knows, maybe the old adage that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree is true: Scott truly is a Peterson.
