Authorities say a 13-year-old Michigan girl falsely text-messaged a friend that her stepfather was beating her in an attempt to have him arrested for smoking marijuana.

Hazel Park police Lt. Michael Kolp tells The Daily Tribune of Royal Oak that the girl texted a friend on Sunday that her stepfather was assaulting her. The friend then called the police.

When officers arrived at their home in the northern Detroit suburb, the girl said she made up the story because she was tired of her stepfather smoking marijuana in their home and wanted police to respond.

The 32-year-old man was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession. He is scheduled to appear in Hazel Park District Court on Jan. 29.

The man had no attorney on record with the court.
