A small plane crashed Friday in rural western North Carolina, killing three people on board, officials said.

The single-engine Cessna 182 was on its way from Dublin, Ga. to Asheville Regional Airport when it disappeared from radar around 11 a.m. Air traffic control lost contact with the plane about 1 1/2 miles northwest of the airport, said Kathleen Bergen, spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration in Atlanta.

The plane, built in 1977, was registered to Steven R. Garner of Dublin, Ga., according to the FAA Web site. No other details were immediately available.
