U.N. Security Council will meet Wednesday afternoon to consult on the the situation in Myanmar, a spokeswoman at the secretary-general's office said.

The U.N. special envoy for Myanmar, Ibrahim Gambari, will brief the council on the violent confrontation between the military rulers and pro-democracy demonstrators, including Buddhist monks, the spokesperson said.

Earlier Wednesday, U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown called for an urgent Security Council meeting to discuss the way the Myanmar government was responding to protests.

The meeting was scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
