Report: Fifth Graders Forced to Eat Lunch on Gym Floor

A New Jersey school administrator has been placed on leave after allegations she punished a class of fifth graders by forcing them to eat their lunches on a gymnasium floor for two weeks.

Theresa Brown, the vice principal of Sumner Elementary School in Camden, N.J., has been put on immediate leave, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Community activist Angel Cordero told the paper that the children — all Hispanic — were punished after one student spilled water while trying to replace a water-cooler jug, the paper said.

"These kids are ESL [English as a Second Language] kids who came from other countries," Cordero told the paper. "They're humble."

Bart Leff, a spokesman for the Camden school district, told the Inquirer the matter was under investigation and would not comment further.
