Many Americans say they plan to take a vacation this summer, and most of those say they will be spending their vacation at home rather than overseas.
With the traditional start of the summer vacation season fast approaching, the latest FOX News poll, conducted by Opinion Dynamics Corporation, finds that 59 percent of Americans plan to take a summer vacation. As was the case last year, vacationers largely plan to take their respite in the United States (82 percent), with 13 percent saying they will travel internationally.
Just over four in 10 vacationers (43 percent) plan to spend about the same amount of money on this year’s summer break as they spent last year, 28 percent plan to spend more, and 25 percent plan to spend less this year compared to last.
For fun, respondents were asked to choose which member of the Bush administration and which Democratic leader they would most like to spend part of their summer vacation with.
From a list of three Republicans, one-third of Americans pick Secretary of State Colin Powell and 32 percent pick President George W. Bush. Only eight percent say they would want to hang out this summer with Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, and 23 percent of Americans volunteer "none" of the above. Among Democrats, Powell was the top vacation partner choice at 43 percent, followed by "none" at 35 percent and Bush at 15 percent. Bush was the top choice among Republicans at 51 percent, followed by Powell at 24 percent.
When asked to name which Democratic leader they would most like to spend vacation time with, fully 42 percent of Americans say "none," followed by 31 percent who say former President Bill Clinton, 12 percent say Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy and 11 percent who say Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle. Democrats were most likely to say they would enjoy spending their vacation with Clinton (53 percent), while Republicans were most likely to say "none" (61 percent).
Polling was conducted by telephone May 6-7, 2003 in the evenings. The sample is 900 registered voters nationwide with a margin of error of ±3 percentage points.
