A Texas man has been arrested on kidnapping charges and his alleged victim has been freed after she slipped a note to a southern Colorado store clerk pleading for help.

Alamosa police arrested 25-year-old John D. Gutierrez of Amarillo, Texas, on Sunday outside a farm and ranch store where he and the alleged victim had been shopping.

Authorities say a store clerk called police after the woman gave the clerk the note and mouthed "help me."

Police say the woman told investigators Gutierrez took her captive a month ago and forced her to travel with him across New Mexico and Colorado and possibly other states.

Gutierrez is being held without bail. It wasn't immediately known if he had an attorney, and jail officials didn't immediately return a call.
