JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – Both the pilot of a single-engine propeller plane and his passenger escaped an emergency landing without injury Saturday afternoon, the Jacksonville Beach Police Department said.
The aircraft lost power around 5 p.m. Saturday and was forced to land on the beach, Jacksonville Beach Police Sgt. Tom Bingham said.
The plane landed nose-first into the sand as tanned beachgoers looked on from a distance. Bingham said no one on the beach was injured in the landing. The plane was returning to a Jacksonville area airfield when it was forced to land in the sand instead.
Although no one was hurt in the landing, the impact on the sand did slightly damage the plane's propeller and nose wheel, Bingham told The Florida Times-Union.
A message left with the Jacksonville Beach Police Department by The Associated Press was not immediately returned Saturday evening.
