Pelosi Had More Guards Than Guests?

Now some fresh pickings from the Political Grapevine:

Party Patrol

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reportedly had more security guards than guests at a recent Florida fundraiser. The Palm Beach Post writes Pelosi had 12 guards, mostly Capitol police, plus four Palm Beach officers, two sheriff's deputies and two police boats, adding up to at least 20 in her security detail. There were 18 guests.

California Republican congressional candidate Dana Walsh is asking that Pelosi or the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee repay taxpayers for the expense. Pelosi's office told us the numbers in the newspaper story are not true, but would not comment directly on security arrangements.

Uninvited?

The Army is considering rescinding an invitation to Evangelist Franklin Graham to appear at the Pentagon next month after a complaint about his description of Islam as evil.

The president of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation says inviting Graham, who is the son of famed evangelist Billy Graham to the National Day of Prayer event would endanger American troops by upsetting Muslim extremists.

An Army spokesman said this about Graham's invite quote: "His presence at the event may be taken by some as inappropriate for a government agency."

Franklin Graham is the honorary chairman of the National Day of Prayer Task Force this year that facilitates events across the country. Graham has since written that he does not believe Muslims are evil because of their faith, but believes he needs to speak out against the terrible deeds that are committed as a result of Islamic teaching.

Not a Walk in the Park

And finally, the U.S. Park Police are taking responsibility for pushing reporters away from the White House Tuesday as six military members were protesting the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. Reporters were told by police the area was closed.

A Park Police spokesman blamed enthusiastic officers for what he called a rookie, amateur mistake. He says neither the Secret Service nor administration officials were involved: "There was no malice — but we know you can't unring the bell. We screwed up."
