TORONTO – Gwyneth Paltrow (search), Cameron Diaz (search) and Keira Knightley (search) will be among the headliners at the Toronto International Film Festival (search).
Paltrow's drama "Proof," (search) Diaz's sister tale "In Her Shoes" and Knightley's new take on "Pride and Prejudice" all will play at the festival, organizers announced Tuesday. The festival runs Sept. 8-17.
"Proof," reuniting Paltrow with her "Shakespeare in Love" director John Madden, is an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play about a woman coping with the death of her father (Anthony Hopkins), a math genius who lived on the cusp of madness.
Diaz co-stars with Toni Collette in "In Her Shoes," about estranged, mirror-opposite sisters who rekindle their family ties with the help of a grandmother (Shirley MacLaine) they thought was dead. Curtis Hanson ("L.A. Confidential," "Wonder Boys") directs.
Knightley plays Austen's free-thinking heroine in the period piece "Pride and Prejudice," set in the late 18th century and centered on the hopes and heartaches of sisters whose mother (Brenda Blethyn) hopes to marry them into money.
The festival opens with director Deepa Mehta's "Water," chronicling the narrative of a child bride in India before its independence.
Other previously announced festival films include David Cronenberg's "A History of Violence," starring Viggo Mortensen as a diner owner whose heroics bring mobsters into his life; Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain," a 1960s tale of cowboy lovers starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal; and "Shopgirl," (search) adapted from Steve Martin's novella and starring Claire Danes as a Saks clerk wooed by a young suitor (Jason Schwartzman) and an older man (Martin).
Now in its 30th year, the Toronto event is North America's biggest film festival, a key launching pad for top fall releases and Academy Award contenders.
