Lightning struck a softball field Wednesday night at a prison, killing one inmate and injuring five prisoners and two guards, authorities said.

The inmates were playing softball when the lightning struck, said Tim Brunsman (search), warden at the Chillicothe Correctional Institution (search). A storm was moving through the area at the time.

The injured were taken to a hospital in this city 45 miles south of Columbus. Their conditions were not available.

The victims' names were not released.

The prison houses about 2,600 inmates and has been open since 1966, according to its Web site.
