Officials investigated a report of a gunman on the campus of Stony Brook University in Long Island, N.Y., on Monday and determined there was no immediate threat to students.

There had been no reports of shots being fired on the eastern Long Island campus.

An alert on the university Web site said a young male "fled the Student Activity Center Cafeteria and later displayed what was reported as a handgun."

The man, about 25, was wearing a black coat and black wool hat and fled in the direction of Harriman Hall.

A later advisory said University Police searched the area and issued an all-clear to students to continue classes as campus officials stepped up patrols.

A man answering a telephone at the campus police office declined to comment.
