NEW YORK – The New York City medical examiner has declared a man's death a homicide — complications of gunshot wounds he suffered 49 years ago.
Authorities called it the oldest reclassified homicide in New York Police Department history.
William Jenkins, 66, died last month. He was 18 when he was paralyzed in a gang shooting.
Two teenage brothers served prison time but turned their lives around. George Lemus is now 64 and runs a computer repair business. His brother, Robert, died a decade ago.
Lemus told The New York Times on Wednesday that the new findings gave him goosebumps.
The district attorney will not prosecute further.
The victim's brother, Samuel Jenkins, agrees with that decision. He said his brother forgave the shooters.
