Moderate Quake Jolts Tokyo Area

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake jolted the Tokyo region on Thursday, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, the Meteorological Agency reported.

There was no threat of tsunami, the agency said, but the high-speed bullet train service between Tokyo and Yokohama to the west was suspended as a precaution.

The 5:18 p.m. (0818 GMT) quake was centered in Tokyo Bay off the coast of Chiba Prefecture, just east of the capital, at a depth of 70 kilometers (43 miles) below sea level.

The quake jolted buildings in central Tokyo, and affected regions surrounding the capital.
