Hey, fashionistas!
All that hububb about Michelle's inauguration dress and what type of style the First Lady would bring to the White House has seemed to die down. In recent days however, Michelle has worn some of her prettiest ensembles honing her signature look more and more.
I have been very complimentary of Michelle in the past, loving almost all of her choices (with the exception of Election night) and recent days have only proven me right. Often opting for sheath-dresses and sleeveless styles, Michelle stuck to her fashionable guns gracing the cover of the March issue of Vogue. Every first lady since Lou Hoover (with the exception of Bess Truman) has been seen in the magazine, but Michelle is only the second cover girl (Hillary Clinton being the first).
She again went with young designer, Jason Wu (best known for creating her inauguration gown) choosing a magenta silk style. According to editor and writer, Andre Leon Talley, the First Lady made her own choice as opposed to seeking the help of the fashion expert. Michelle says in Vogue, "First and foremost, I wear what I love. That's what women have to focus on: what makes them happy and what makes them feel comfortable and beautiful. If I can have any impact, I want women to feel good about themselves and have fun with fashion."
And when asked about the constant critique of her wardrobe choices Michelle said, "I'm not going to pretend that I don't care about it," she said. "But I also have to be very practical. In the end, someone will always not like what you wear — people just have different tastes."
Well so far I love Michelle's taste and her tendency to pick little known American designers. It takes guts to go with someone lesser known and in turn these designers (such as Isabel Toledo and Jason Wu) get buzz and business thanks to Michelle! As I've said before, I believe the First Lady will prove to be a fashion icon, because she doesn't make obvious choices and looks great in the process.
Since her cover shoot, Michelle looked equally elegant presenting an award to Stevie Wonder in an emerald dress, at the State of the Union in a sleeveless plum combo, for the day of the Governor's dinner in another sleeveless sheath,and in a drop-dead silvery-grey beaded Peter Soronen gown for evening. So what can we expect to see in the next 100 days? Well certainly, I foresee Michelle sticking with what she loves — sleeveless styles, sheath dresses, kitten heels and bright colors. I'll be sure to update you in April on what she has in store for Spring.
