Updated

The elections this past week were historic, not just because of the stunning numbers, but because the impact was well beyond the obvious upheaval in the House and Senate.

The elections saw flips of power in 19 states and there was an effect all the way to local levels. The subterranean impact within state legislatures and even municipal races will create a totally different political landscape.

Now to put this year's political process in perspective, I want to recap the elections for you. And I decided I'd use a little help from some of my friends in Hollywood.

The Tea Party movement was the catalyst for this year's political climate. The best way to sum it up would be this:

(BEGIN 'NETWORK' VIDEO CLIP)

PETER FINCH AS HOWARD BEALE: I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this any more!

(END VIDEO CLIP)

That was the mood all right!

And you know the voters' anger only grew as Congress shoved Obamacare right down our throats despite overwhelming public opposition. The bills were crafted behind locked doors in the middle of the night because members of Congress didn't think we would understand:

(BEGIN 'A FEW GOOD MEN' VIDEO CLIP)

JACK NICHOLSON AS COL. NATHAN R. JESSEP: You can't handle the truth!

(END VIDEO CLIP)

Well, actually we can, Mr. Congressman. We can handle it just fine.

But you know what happened? Protests, town halls and letters didn't seem to matter to members of Congress or the president, who thought it was just a matter of persuasion:

(BEGIN 'COOL HAND LUKE' VIDEO CLIP)

STROTHER MARTIN AS CAPTAIN: What we got here is... failure to communicate.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

Boy, we did have a failure to communicate, didn't we?

But that didn't stop the people. No, they pressed forward and they decided they too had a mission:

(BEGIN 'THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW' VIDEO CLIPS)

DON KNOTTS AS BARNEY FIFE: Nip it in the bud.

Nip it.

Nip it.

Nip it.

Nip it in the bud!

(END VIDEO CLIPS)

Nip it in the bud, indeed!

So on Election Day, the message was strong, loud and it was clear:

(BEGIN 'THE APPRENTICE' VIDEO CLIPS)

DONALD TRUMP: You're fired.

You're fired.

You're fired.

(END VIDEO CLIPS)

Boy, that was the message, all right. Incumbents all over —

(BEGIN 'THE APPRENTICE' VIDEO CLIPS)

TRUMP: You're fired.

You're fired.

You're fired.

You're fired.

You're fired.

You're fired.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

OK, Donald. I think we get it: A lot of people were fired all right! You'd think Donald Trump personally did it, he enjoyed it so much.

Well, as you know, incumbents went down in flames — even long-time veterans and committee chairman were given a very blunt message:

(BEGIN 'TERMINATOR 2' VIDEO CLIP)

ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER AS THE TERMINATOR: Hasta la vista, baby.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

Well, they were told goodbye. And you know what happened, by the time the final returns were in, the TV anchors were assessing the damage to the leadership of the Democratic Party:

(BEGIN 'THE SIXTH SENSE' VIDEO CLIP)

HALEY JOEL OSMENT AS COLE SEAR: I see dead people.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

That's what they were seeing, all right. Because boy, it was tough out there.

And you know what? The concession speeches by once high and mighty members of Congress reflected the disappointment they had from being rejected:

(BEGIN 'ON THE WATERFRONT' VIDEO CLIP)

MARLON BRANDO AS TERRY MALLOY: You don't understand. I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody. Instead of a bum, which is what I am.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

Coulda been a contender!

But even after the crushing defeats, Senator Harry Reid still thought the message of the elections was that the Republicans ought to compromise and they should bend more toward the very policies that Americans had soundly rejected:

(BEGIN 'MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL' VIDEO CLIP)

GRAHAM CHAPMAN AS KING ARTHUR: Now, stand aside, worth adversary.

JOHN CLEESE AS THE BLACK NIGHT: 'Tis but a scratch.

KING ARTHUR: A scratch? Your arm's off.

THE BLACK NIGHT: No it isn't.

KING ARTHUR: Well, what's that then?

THE BLACK NIGHT: I've had worse.

KING ARTHUR: You liar!

THE BLACK NIGHT: Come on, you pansy!

(END VIDEO CLIP)

No, they weren't invincible. They got beat!

Well, the president didn't fully grasp what had happened, because even after a drubbing — or shellacking — he still thinks people love him:

(BEGIN 'TITANIC' VIDEO CLIP)

LEONARDO DICAPRIO AS JACK DAWSON: I'm the king of the world!

(END VIDEO CLIP)

You know, even in a stinging defeat, Speaker Pelosi continued to smile and believe that the voters had just marked the wrong ballot —millions of times — and she maintained her optimism that all the Democrats would be back on top soon:

(BEGIN 'GONE WITH THE WIND' VIDEO CLIP)

VIVIEN LEIGH AS SCARLETT O'HARA: After all, tomorrow is another day.

(END VIDEO CLIP)
