Within moments of our Monday segment on “DaySide” about that disgusting display at the Super Bowl (search), the head of the FCC announced that he will investigate CBS and MTV for the breast-baring stunt by Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson.
Here's what Michael Powell says:
"I have instructed the Commission to open an immediate investigation into last night's broadcast. Our investigation will be thorough and swift."
Let's hope so.
Just because CBS says MTV will never get to produce another halftime show does not make it better. I'd wager that many parents are STILL trying to answer their kids' questions about that little incident.
It is legal for the FCC to fine broadcast networks for incidents such as this. Some of you are saying that this is what should happen to CBS/MTV. If so -- the only fine that will really get the networks' attentions is a big one. If a fine is the way to go, it should be big enough that it takes a real bite out of the networks' Super Bowl profit. Otherwise it's just a slap on the wrist.
But there's another thing. I want celebs to stop trying to one-up each other with scandalous stunts on stage. There was nothing redeeming, or artistic about Britney and Madonna's "kiss". Ditto with Nelly's crotch-grabbing. Big ditto with Janet's breast.
How the heck can we get the message to performers that we don’t want to see this garbage?
