Janet Jackson, the Super Bowl, and Me

Hi, I'm Bill O'Reilly.  Thank you for watching us tonight.

Janet Jackson, the Super Bowl, and me, that is the subject of this evening's "Talking Points Memo."  Well, I was there and that was the best football game I have ever seen.  Congrats to the Pats and to the Panthers.  Carolina played great.  It was a shame someone had to lose.

City of Houston did a terrific job hosting what is basically an out of control event, especially the Houston cops. They were outstanding.

Now for the bad news, security at the stadium was intense.  Seventy thousand fans had to wait hours to get in. Yet a streaker gets on the field? How does that happen with thousands of security people? And then there's Janet Jackson and MTV, which produced the half-time show. Jackson and Justin Timberlake rehearsed all week long. No skin was flashed. CBS had no idea what was going to happen, but MTV knew. It dropped hints some bizarre thing was in the works.

Seeking to top the Britney-Madonna kiss, Jackson and Timberlake acted suggestively and finally Timberlake ripped her top off obviously, an inappropriate display in front of millions of children.

This is not about a bare breast. If Janet Jackson wants to flash, she can come on over to my office anytime.  I'll leave the door unlocked for you, Janet. Partial nudity's no big deal except when it is totally out of context and youngsters are watching. Get it? That's sleazy.

What Jackson and Timberlake did was immature and disrespectful to millions of American parents, who don't want that kind of libertine stuff in their living rooms.

There was no reason to do it, but the pair did. It was all about shock. But at this point, why would anyone be shocked at how the  pop music industry behaves? The whole MTV thing is built on sex, drugs, and bad behavior with some exceptions. The more disrespectful a pop star is, the greater chance of success.

Of course, children suffer in the process, as they too often become sexualized and disrespectful themselves. Janet Jackson should be ashamed, but that would require her to actually think.  The staff at the St. Regis Hotel in Houston where the diva stayed said she was a total pain in the butt, making all kinds of unreasonable demands.  Jackson should check out Beyonce (search), who sang the national anthem with dignity and behaved in a classy way. I just hope her record sales don't suffer because of it.

Finally enough is enough with this rap hip-hop culture deal. The National Football League (search) got what it deserved.  Crudeness is at the epicenter of the MTV culture.  I hope these fools are proud of themselves.  And I hope clear thinking Americans finally get the message.

The Most Ridiculous Item of the Day

Time now for "The Most Ridiculous Item of the Day."

Boston is one of my favorite cities. I lived there for years. Thus, I was very disappointed to see scenes like the following here.  Thugs used the Patriots' victory as an excuse to create mayhem. They're they are. And there's no excuse for that.  It embarrasses the good people of New England and, once again, demonstrates that a very few can spoil the party for the vast majority.

And there's just absolutely no excuse for this, but, if the very few are punished harshly, these people, perhaps they might not do it again.  That's not ridiculous.  That's justice.  So I hope they get these guys.
