Sheriff's officials are investigating how an inmate at a central Florida jail obtained a loaded handgun in an attempted escape.

A sheriff's spokeswoman says Osceola County Jail inmate Angel Santiago pulled out a gun and threatened to kill an officer escorting him back to his cell Monday evening.

Authorities say the 28-year-old inmate forced the officer into a medical bay and ordered him to swap uniforms. Other officers confronted Santiago and were able to disarm him. It is unclear how he got the gun.

Records show Santiago is serving two life sentences for shooting a robbery victim in the stomach and is awaiting trail and a possible third life sentence for armed robbery. Authorities say he is facing several charges for the escape attempt.
